The Art of Face Care

If nobody has ever actually taught you how to take care of your face, you may not have ever learned the proper techniques to do so, and your skincare routine may be in need of some refinement.

Allowing the proper amount of time to wash your face every morning and evening is needed, anywhere between 5 and 10 minutes.  If you’re one of those people who simply splash your face with water and gets away with it, you should feel quite lucky.  Most of us, don’t quite have the skin that can get away with that. Moreover, between the dirt and the grime that really ought to be properly removed, in addition to oils, dead skin, and makeup too – skipping a regular washing of your face is not recommended.

Building a skincare routine, if you don’t already have one, is of utmost importance, and will help you feel like you have a good sense of what each step should be while using the best products for your skin type.

Choosing the Right Cleanser and Moisturizer

Identifying the right cleanser is the first step, and many people will choose a cleaner that is fragrance-free which lowers the potential for it causing irritation. Also when removing makeup, you will want to avoid products that contain alcohol, as well as oil-based makeup removers. Note that over washing your face can also have the opposite effect and worsen whatever skin problems you may have.  Twice a day face washing should be sufficient unless you’re following different instructions from your physician.

Next, pick a moisturizer that you’ll plan to use year-round; what you use on your hands and your legs will not necessarily be the same thing that you use on your face.  There are so many products on the market, that identifying if your skin type is oily, normal, dry, or sensitive is going to be your first step.  Then you will be able to determine if you want to use a gel moisturizer, lotion, or cream.

Many excellent products have well earned their seals of approval, and so the difficulty is knowing which one to pick.  Unfortunately, the actual selection involves some trial and error. We suggest doing research online while looking at user reviews.  Whatever you decide, know that it may take trying a few products to find the one that works best for you.  If you are part of a community of friends who share a lot of tips about their skincare, you can gather your experiences with different skin care products to help determine what is going to best to try, or at least which products you may want to avoid altogether.

Protecting With a Sunscreen

Finally, you will need to protect yourself with a great sunscreen year-round, and not only in the summertime.  Melanoma is known to be the deadliest form of skin cancer so be sure to protect your skin from harmful UV exposure. Remember that the most common place for the formation of skin cancer is the face. Use a sunscreen on your face with at least an SPF of 30, and be sure to apply it correctly including at least 15 minutes before being exposed to the sun and then again every 2 hours, and after sweating or swimming.

Face care requires time, so be sure to build that routine and keep to it every day of the year. It’s worth every minute to ensure your overall health and wellbeing.
