The Importance Of Exfoliation

Exfoliation is an important part of skin care where you get rid of dead skin cells allowing the skin to glow and look and feel healthy. Sometimes, though, there is a chance of over-exfoliating the skin in which you not only remove dead skin cells but live ones as well and that is no good for your skin. The ways this happens is by:

  1. Using your normal exfoliator more often than you are supposed to.
  2. Using excessive chemical exfoliators which you may buy without the help of a beauty therapist or possibly online. These products may contain very strong concentrations of acids. What happens here is excessive chemical exfoliation and this will only damage the skin.
  3. Having too many products that you use during your skincare routine that has some form of exfoliant in it

What happens if you over exfoliate?

If over-exfoliation occurs, especially in the case of the first two scenarios, your skin will appear red and feel raw – not good at all. In the case of over-exfoliating with the use of a chemical exfoliant, there will be a chemical burn. This may result in a blister or blisters and will be painful. If over-exfoliation is repeated continuously, your complexion will, unfortunately, have a strong pink tint to it, will feel and look dry as well as flaky. By exfoliating too much, you essentially strip away the lipids and proteins that are exceptionally important towards keeping the outside of the skin intact as well as locking hydration in and keeping elements that irritate it out. You will know all about it because your skin will become easily irritated by anything and everything big or small.

Clogged pores may also plague you. This is the irony in over-exfoliation as most people exfoliate to get rid of big, clogged, oily pores.

How To Exfoliate According To Skin Type

Normal Skin

If you have normal skin you can apply chemical or physical exfoliation. As your skin doesn’t really suffer from any sort of sensitivities, a little bit of both is good. Just remember to leave at least 3 days apart between exfoliants and alternate.

Dry Skin

Dry skin is complicated as you don’t want to do anything to make it even drier. If you use chemical exfoliants, there will only be more dryness and irritation. The best thing to use here are creamy exfoliants at the maximum of three times per week.

Oily Skin

Having oily skin is the reason so many people exfoliate. As long as you don’t have sensitive skin you can go for a daily method with a very light scrub. It may have acid, just speak to a beauty therapist first with regards to which product is best for you.

Combination Skin

With combination skin, you have the option of using a few products. Still, stick to exfoliating only every 3 days but you can alternate between exfoliators. Alternating includes using chemical options as well as regular physical exfoliators.

At the end of the day it’s important to get rid of dead skin cells. Just do it the best way that’s good for your skin.
